The Den began as a complaint. Every bed we bought was ignored in favour of whatever box the delivery came in — and once you stop being annoyed by that and start paying attention, the reason is obvious. A box gives a cat four walls, a ceiling and one entrance. It reduces the number of directions worth watching, and a cat that stops watching finally sleeps.
So we built the box properly. A rigid frame wrapped in tight-woven tan canvas, solid brass corner caps at every edge, and a lock plate and nameplate in the same brass. The proportions are the point: low sides, a single open face, and a footprint sized so a settled cat touches something on three sides at once.
The cushion is dense shearling, cut to sit flush with the rim so there is no gap to slip into. It lifts out in one piece and washes cold. The case wipes clean with a barely damp cloth.
It is built to sit in the room you actually use, next to furniture you chose on purpose. Nothing about it needs hiding behind a sofa.

Remove the cover and machine wash cold on a wool cycle, then dry flat. Brush the felt with a lint brush between washes. Wipe the frame with a barely damp cloth — no solvents, no oil.
